The San Agustin Church

The San Agustin Church lies inside the walled city of Intramuros located in the capital city Manila, Philippines. It is the first European stone church to be built in the Philippines designed in Spanish architectural structure. The church also houses the legacies of the Spanish conquistadors, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Juan de Salcedo and Martin de Goiti who are buried and laid to rest in a tomb, underneath the church.

A Church of History and Heritage

The San Agustin Church, one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines inscribed in 1993 on the World Heritabe List pursuant to the 1972 UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Inside the Church

The church has 14 side chapels and a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. Up in the choir loft are the hand-carved 17th-century seats of molave, a beautiful tropical hardwood. Adjacent to the church is a small museum run by the Augustinian order, featuring antique vestments, colonial furniture, and religious paintings and icons.

Last December 2007, we went back home to do some preparations. We made ocular visits to churches in Manila, particularly Intramuros, as we find the area more "historic" and memorable. (We loved watching shows in Intramuros before, part of thw WoW philippines project of DOT ). We considered both MC and San Agustin. MC is a great church, literally. It's huge! And if you really want to walk down a long and wide aisle this is really the church  for you. We inquired in the church office. They're strict and they even require would be couples to have an interview even before the confirmation of the slot. We held the hand-outs they've given us and went inside the church. Inside, it was deafening. I don't know if it was the high ceiling, or the space that surrounds us. Then, I felt dizzy, almost fainting. I asked Francis to take me out of there. Hmmm... bad vibes. Off we went to San Agustin Church.
This church is beautiful. Francis liked it more than MC. The 18th century chandeliers, the splendid trompe l’oeil barrel vault and dome, the altar, the side-chapels everything about it is amazing. On September 28, 2008 at two in the afternoon, we're booked to get married at San Agustin Church, Intramuros Manila. :)
